Final Post - 2013

Week 10 at Hobsonville Point Secondary School. Unlike all other experiences of Term 4, this one has become more busy as we have progressed.

The last couple of weeks seem like more than 2 have passed. We have had Orientation Day for the foundation students plus planning, planning, planning around Modules / Spins and Communities / Hubs.

The above is our Hub Tree for the Community Tiriwa. On Orientation Day students produced a leaf to describe details about themselves (family, friends, interests, sports, music). As well as participating in a Design Learning Activity (the sculpture below) and a Big Projects Activity (Planning and producing a food platter for the visiting parents in the evening).

As a hub Yas, Pete, Ros, Kylee and I, during hub planning, produced a sculpture to represent and define the meaning of Manaakitanga. Manaakitanga and its root word, manaaki, describes or manifests, in a Māori sense, more of a broader cultural concept around reciprocity of kindness, respect and humanity.  The world is presented as a heart shape. The hands holding the world state "Everyone achieves more together". The outside ring of words state " The future belongs to the few still willing to dirty their hands".

Below are the revised alterations to the teacher and student planners for BIG Projects. All staff completed a mock planning session for the project BIN THINKING. The changes needed were established from this activity.

Since Orientation Day Yas, Pete, Ros and myself have moved into our Tiriwa Hub area to do our planning work. It has been nice to have a place to set up our stuff. Usually in a traditional setting we would be in an office with members of our Department or Faculty. It is refreshing to have a work space that is shared with people from different subject areas.

Today is my last day at HPSS for 2013. Lots still to do before students arrive. Looking forward to 2014.
